Friends, I am excited to share that we have received our first major funding commitments and are launching Democracy 2076’s program to build a constitution for 2076! This project gathers local organizers from around the country––who are most proximate to the challenges our democracy is facing––to determine how our Constitution can best serve our country’s needs in 2076. Planning is underway for the first convening of these stakeholders this December. You can find out more information here. Most importantly, I want to thank you for your support in reaching this major milestone of launching a portion of Democracy 2076’s work. Whether you gave feedback on the concept note, financial resources, introduced me to others, shared your professional expertise, gave me an opportunity to write or speak about this work, or offered encouraging words: this would not be possible without all of you. We are continuing to fundraise to expand the number of participants who can join us for the Constitution 2076 gatherings and to launch the other two projects of Democracy 2076. If you’re interested in supporting our various efforts, please respond to this email directly. If you’re looking for other ways to join us on this journey of amending our Constitution, here are a few actions you could take: Share big constitutional changes that you would like to see come to fruition over the next 50 years. Think structural changes for governance (e.g. Electoral College or SCOTUS reform), new affirmative rights for individuals, or aspects of our social contract (e.g. community support for families, balanced budget). Feel free to reply to this email with ideas you have or are working on or have read about. It’s especially helpful if you can share folks you know working on these ideas already.
Share trends and contexts that––based on your expertise––you think are most likely to impact our systems and governing institutions. This could be in any realm, including (but not limited to) science, culture, health, technology, geopolitics, economics, etc. Please reply to this email with any suggestions you may have!
Nominate civic leaders who would be good convening participants – As we pull together the convening, we are looking for civic leaders who are also community leaders. These people could be subnational organizers or have some other role in community life that positions them in leadership roles (eg. school system administrator or religious leader). We are especially interested in including young people and are looking for ideological and geographic diversity. Please reply to this email with any suggestions you may have!
As we reach out to folks to join us for our convenings around Constitutional work, we have launched a website for Democracy 2076 so possible participants have a way to learn about the various integrated prongs of our strategy. As with the other pieces, feedback and suggestions are always welcome! Please feel free to forward this email along to others who might be interested, and let me know if there are others who you think would like these updates.
